AUTO PILOT - fine tuning
« on: November 09, 2008, 07:13:56 pm »
It' s possible to fine tune the AP (AUTO PILOT)!

At the end of my first post I wrote:

btw.: according to the FPL my last trip included a steep turn of more than 290°. It was for the first time that I let the AP follow the selected track. I was a little disappointed when I realized how the acft executed this 'steep turn'. Even my grandmother would have said 'this is what I call a smooth ride', I think. I would have expected a more military jet-like turn with a banking of more than 45° and pulling some g' s next to 2 or so. But ...

Studying the 'aircraft'-file I found three lines which read

max_bank=27,14
max_bank_acceleration=1.8
max_bank_velocity=3.00

by default.

Changing them to

max_bank=42,5
max_bank_acceleration=2.8
max_bank_velocity=3.90

results in a much more direct performance of the AUTO PILOT. The acft executes steep turns within the filed track more precisely after changing the three lines.

The only disadvantage: my grandmother has to stay at home now  ;)

Please make sure that you will create a safety copy of the aircraft file before making any changes.

Regards from Bavaria!

Leaving the frequency - good bye!

Thanks for that hotelfox
I changed the files like this

max_bank=42,5 //27,14
max_bank_acceleration=2.8 //1.8
max_bank_velocity=3.90 //3.00

By commenting out the originals you don't have to worry
about backing up files all the time ,,as long as you don't
change whats right of the "//"

Much closer now to what I expect from a fighter 8)
Thanks again
Randy

Now we need it to pull 4.5G turns for some 180° and more turns.

Very good to know about that, Intrepid! Thanks for the info!

I' m still testing if the AP accepts more 'spicy' figures - will keep the forum posted.

After some test flights* I will stick to the following AP configuration:

max_bank=48.0                  //27.14
max_bank_acceleration=3.90            //1.8
max_bank_velocity=4.20               //3.0

The AP now pulls up to 1.6 G' s at an IAS around 450 kt (according to what I know quite a typical speed for VFR low level missions).

*my 2 favourites among them - from LSME to LFMI and from EGQS to EGOV

Thanks for this observation and tests.  I shall use your example, hotelfox, and compare to some other aircraft.  This will take time on my part.  I'm certain I'll learn a lot.
