Widescreen config
« on: June 20, 2008, 02:34:54 pm »
I just got my new widescreen LCD 22". Now I need your advice on this. At the moment I am running my FS9 on 1440*900 pixels with good FPS never drop bellow 20. But If I change the resolution to my native screen 1680*1050 the FPS will drop to 8-10 FPS and with full clouds from AS it will run on 2-5 FPS. I tested all this using Overland bird.

Could someone explain it to me about this issue and also the fix for this please? I really don't understand my the frame drop so much. FYI I am suing E8400, 4GB DDR2 and 8800 GTS 320MB and the latest driver Nforce 175.16 in Vista 32bit.

Thanks a million.

That's probably most likely due to your video memory as you go higher in resolutions the faster and more memory the video card needs to have the 8800gts that you have has only 320 its a good card but the memory needs to be higher if you want higher resolutions.

Thanks for the answer.

I am planning to get 9800GTX since the price is dropping like crazy. Or should I get GTX260?

HI hendrik that's a good question :) here's a review of the gtx260 with fsx over at toms hardware. http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/nvidia-gtx-280,1953-15.html remember the drivers are not that great right now so far from the reviews I have seen, then you have the 9800gtx price drop, it is very nice card and a steal at its current low price.

The gtx260 is about $400 usd and up, at around 400 dollars usd you can get a GeForce 9800 GX2 with 1gb of memory no need for sli since you got 2 cards in one slot, and it a very strong video card. it really depends are your budget and if your power supply can handle it, and to make it even more crazy you have the new ati cards at a great price. http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.aspx?i=3341 you really gotta love competition :D

Cesar,

Thanks for all the input. I have read all those benchmark and to be honest, DO NOT KNOW what to buy. My mobo now is P35 so CF with ATI is the only option to run Dual Video Card. PC hardware nowadays is so confusing, back in the old days I did not need to upgrade every year I could wait for 2-3 years. Now every 6 months they have something new!!!

Either way running SLI/ CF  or not I need to buy a new PSU, any recommendation?

I put together several systems for myself for the purpose of a professional level simulator.  I have a couple of them that are brand new boards with processors, memory, Harddrives and video cards that have never been opened or used.  Are you wanting a custom system or an off-the-self one?

I have a system with the following specs for SALE.  If you are interested (even if you have a budget), I'll work with you.

Here are the system spec.'s for one of them:-

Hardware:

1. Intel Quad Core Extreme QX6700 - 2.67GHz.
2. ASUS Striker Extreme NVIDIA nForce 680i SLI - (Clocked at 1200Mhz).
3. OCZ PC2-8500 - 4GB RAM (Clocked -1200MHz).
4. x2 BFG GeForce 8800 GTX 768GB Water Cooled Edition (x2 PCIe in SLI Mode with either Driver v.175.16).
5. HDD 1 SATA 300GB (and/or HDD 2 PATA/IDE Western Digital - 1.0TB - Optional).
(Entire system components listed above are Water Cooled)
6. SupremeFX/ Array M Sound Card - PCIx1.
7. Matrox Triple Head2GO Analog Edition - (x3 with ViewSonic 20" Inch - Total Res. 3840x1024 32-Bit).
8. PSW 750W with x4 6-pin PCIe rails, x10 SATA, x8 Molex and x2 Floppy power connectors .

Addition components include swapable SATA/PATA-IDE HDD trays, Floppy Drive and 24x DVD/CD Burner/Writer with Lightscribe etc.

Will post pic's if you are interested.  Just let me know; else the spec.'s are great for a not too expensive system that has plenty of the necessary power to run FS9/FSX and maintain 20-40 FPS at a res. of 3840x1024 32-Bit.

Good Luck!

Eg. Photo of a PC System like the above mentioned.

James,

Thanks for the offer. But I was not looking to buy a new system. I must say looking at the PICs it is quite a monster there!!!! I have never seen something like that in a PC, looking at the inside it's like a electronic jungle with all the cables and whatnot.  ;D

I am not a hardcore gamer. I like my PC to be strong but not a monster strong. My spec it quite moderate

E8400 not OC at all
Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 pro
Kingston DDR2 PC6400 4GB
Asus P5K
Onboard sound card
Asus 8800 GTS320
Seagate Baracuda 10 250GB Sata 2
Western Digital 320GB Sata 2
DVD writer and floppy drive 1.44 (yup still use it, in case of windows crash)
Asus PSU 450Watt with 85% efficiency

And that's about it really... I don't want to spend a huge amount of money on a pc since there are other things/ bills to pay.

Once again thanks for the offer....

BTW: where are you located? I am in The Netherlands.

Hi!

Glad to hear from you.  I live now in the U.S.  but I lived in Holland for a short time in the early '90's.
Well good luck with the PC.  ;D

Sorry for the late reply seems the new ati 4870 which supports direct 10.1 :) is your card to get, its performance is really good and at only 300 dollars bad news is you might have to wait a bit as there going fast here it is in newegg http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&DEPA=0&Description=4870

As for the power supply the good ones are not really cheap, I would go with corsair http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=2010320058+50001459&name=Corsair+Memory%2c+Inc. if you dont have to much cash I would go with this one http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139004 if you can get some more then I would get this one http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139005 followed by and even more expesive but stronger power http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139006 hope this helps you out the 4870 is faster the the 9800gtx http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.aspx?i=3341
