Download links not working (404 Not Found)
« on: September 05, 2021, 04:19:33 pm »
None of the download links are working for all FS9/FSX/P3D products.

I was working on uninstalling/re-installing KLAX and wanted to re-download the installed to make sure I'm installing the latest version.
When I noticed that the link didn't work I checked a few others. Same 404 error for each one that I checked.

All download links are working normally. Tried KLAX right now, and it works just fine, see attached screenshot. Usual suggestions for when downloads of a normally working site are not working locally are:

- Clear the browser cache and restart the browser.

- Refresh ( F5 ) the page which contains the link.

- Try with another browser.

- If that still doesn't fix it, for those rare cases the problem might be your ISP, try with a VPN.

Sorry for the bother. It appears to be a problem with the current version of Firefox (v92.0)

Not really a problem of Firefox, just certain option that is enabled by default which is a good option for extra security, that blocks insecure downloads that use HTTP links rather then secure HTTPS links. Also from what I've read, this feature will soon be coming to all Chrome/Chromium(Edge included) based browser's as well. This of course can be disabled however it is not recommended, using the hidden settings in your browser, which managing those depends, if your using Firefox or a Chrome/Chromium(Edge included) browser.

So hopefully someday Umberto can get HTTPS configured as the default for all FSDT sites and  download links to mitigate the issue without having to disable such options and to future the the site more as well.

Yes, but that's a completely separate issue to the one discussed in this thread, which reported a "404 error", which means a link is not found.

What you are saying here is basically correct but, it won't result in a 404, but rather in the download blocked when using a normal left click, with the option to download it anyway, by right-clicking "save as" and using the option to Keep the download anyway.

And yes, we obviously ARE working to restore Https, because we recently moved to a new host, and it took a while to move everything (you might have noticed the forum software is updated too), Https should always be the last thing to do, because it requires to have all Ip and domains finalized, before you add a secure certificate to them.

Actually it's not a separate issue see the attached screenshot. What you are saying that Firefox should report a message that the download is not from HTTPS and ask if you still want to download is correct. However for some reason that's not working on your website, it's trying to force HTTPS and that's with stock Firefox settings and no extensions. When you click the download link in Firefox for example it redirects to https://update.virtualisoftware.com/filename.exe (ie. filename.exe being the requested download) And even if you try right clicking save as it does the same in Firefox.

Our site is not forcing https because, as I've said, we still haven't installed an https certificate on our site. In your case, it seems the browser is trying to use https, even if the site doesn't have it yet. So, clearly, if you click to a link that is http, but your browser shows as https, it will give a 404.

Which is a different issue than if you click on an http and get a warning it's not secure, which should usually happen only in case of what the browser detected as "mixed content", that is a site with https containing http links. But that's shouldn't because, as I've said, we still don't have https on the new site, we WILL add it soon, but the correct address for our site is http, no idea why some browser decided to show it as https, considering we don't have it yet.

In any case, we updated all links now to be relative instead of absolute so, I think it might fix the problem and use the automatic https from Cloudflare without being flagged as mixed content.
