KLAS Airport and FSX Freeze-up
« on: October 21, 2011, 05:25:58 pm »
Hi,

I have bought the KLAS airport (Las Vegas) and have installed it to my FSX PC with the intentions of using it with AES, however, I have made a few flights from Salt Lake City, Utah (KSLC) into KLAS useing the PMDG 747-400X and the PMDG 737NGX aircraft and as I approach the KLAS airport FSX freezes up and all I can do is esc out and shut down. When I do this there is a message on the desktop that says:

"YOUR COMPUTER HAS RUN OUT OF AVAILABLE MEMORY. PLEASE RESTART FLIGHT SIMULATOR AND SELECT DIFFERENT GRAPHICS, SCENERY, OR TRAFFIC SETTINGS".

Any help to solve this issue would be appreciated.

MY PC SPECS:

WINDOWS 7 64 BIT

MOTHERBOARD: ASUS P8Z68-V PRO

GRAPHICS CARD: Nvidia GeForce GTX 460 2WIN

POWER SUPPLY: Corsair AX750 Professional Series GOLD

CPU: Intel Core i7 Processor, i7-2600K LGA1155

MEMORY: G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model F3-12800CL7D-8GBXH. Intel XMP certified, designed for Intel P67 & Z68

HARD DRIVES: 2 - Western Digital Caviar Black WD5002AALX 500GB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache

I think its the fault of the PMDG NGX and not FSDT's KLAS!

The other day I was flying from KPHX to KLAS and I was on final about 10 miles out from landing at KLAS and got an OOM while in the NGX. I have had FSDT's KLAS since it came out and have flown into in numerous times over the years with all kinds of addon a/c but mostly the LDS 767 and never had an OOM, but the other day flying there in the NGX I got my first OOM at that airport.

We will just have to wait for PMDG to release SP1 and see if that clears up some of the performance issues. I get good FPS in the NGX, but it does draw a lot more RAM resources than most other addon a/c.

SP1 will not help PMDG NGX at all, don't hold your breath. FSX is 32bit application and nothing will help it either. Also, PMDG NGX is very, very complex product that sometimes alone eats more that 3GB of virtual memory with 4GB Max.  Add UT, Scenery, AI traffic, RES, ASE and kaput - you get OOM.

LDS 767 is very easy of virtual memory usage. Probably the least hog in both FS2004 and FSX. This was a reason why you have never had any OOM with LDS.

Also, don't consider W7 64 as a magic bullet that solves all your problems with OOM. 64 bit systems DO NOT PREVENT OOMs. They rather DELAY OOM .

PS. This is another (of many other reasons) why I'm still with FS2004.  ;D I'd rather have good sleep instead of waiting for OOM to happen on each and every approach.

PSS. On a serious note I suggest to save your flight 200nm prior to appoach, exit FSX (this will release the accunulated VM), then load your flight and compete the approach and landing.

Thanks, but I have the same issue with the PMDG 747-400x.  Surely this should work.

I guess adding more memory would do nothing, right?

Thanks

Bob,

1) PMDG 747X is worst VM hog than NGX and it also has memory leaks (however, the developers deny it). The porting from FS2004 to FSX was done very rough (unlike with LDS).

2) Virtual Memory has nothing to do with RAM - it's the limitation of the application. You may have 12GB of RAM installed on your PC, but FSX has limit of 4GB usage in 64-bit environment.

Thanks for the help, I appreciate it a lot as I would like to get thinks working.

Based on the comments so far is this just not workable and possible to do with either PMDG aircraft?

Could any settings in FSX help with this?

Thanks

You might partly solve the problem by reducing the scenery settings slightly. I run into problems starting from KJFK FSDT and doing the Expressway Visual into IMGsim KLGA with aerosoft Manhattan X and PMDG NGX. Installing hotfix 4 (only for freezes), reducing scenery settings and disabling one airport solved it for me.

I have an FSX only Win 7 64 harddrive. Therefore no antivirus, no UAC, no Aero, no Windows Update, no Windows Defender, no Windows Firewall (everything disabled under Control Panel/Services). This frees up some resources. ;D

I turn verything on only for registering products.

Could you be more specific on the "HotFix 4" for freezes, what does it do and were do you get it?

Also, could you tell me more specificly what your scenery settings are so I could try them with my issue?

Thanks

SP1 will not help PMDG NGX at all, don't hold your breath.

And you know this how?  They are including a tool to step down the texture sizes so that will help take some load of the memory usage. I noticed a huge difference when I reduced the texture sizes manually, so for those who haven't done so, this will probably help a bit as it did in my case, although I did have that one OOM.

We dont know what else SP1 will include that might include not only bug fixes but also fixes that will increase performance. Personally I have noticed a lot better performance since using HF4 vs. the RTM version, so it's not out of the question that SP1 may help as well.

BTW Dmitry, you follow the NGX closely even though you dont use FSX?

You can get HF4 here: http://downloads.precisionmanuals.com/file_library/PMDG_737-8900_NGX_2987_Hotfix.ZIP

The thread in which RSR posted it is here: http://forum.avsim.net/topic/349536-25sep11-latest-hotfix-and-sp1-scheduling/

I have stated many times that I do have FSX installed with North American sceneries only and I do have NGX. What I have and what I use - two different things.

You mean how do I know that 32 bit application developed in 2004-2005 and released in 2006  has its own limilations and hi-res textures are simply not suitable for FSX? Neither PMDG nor FSDT nor whoever has magic bullet to break FSX limitations on VM usage. It's like trying to prove that 2x2=5 and not 4. End of story

I really 'love" to read discussions such as "FSX supports 4096 hi-res textures and FS2004 doesn't"...OK, cool...so what is the freaking point to have these 4096 textures if I must to resize them into 1096 to get rid off OOMs.

No, how do you know SP1 wont help the NGX? HF4 and reducing the texture sizes has helped a lot on my rig, but then again not everyone has had the same luck that I have had.

I agree, getting rid of the 4096 textures on the NGX has helped a lot. That was actually the first thing I did when I installed the NGX was to reside the 4096's down to 1024. For those running 4096 NGX textures and 4096 REX textures along with any other abnormally large sized textures, its only a matter of time before an OOM depending on what other settings or addons your using.

BTW, why do you tend to always come across as mad, disgusted, unhappy, or namely in a fowl mood when it comes to anything FSX related? I understand you love FS9 and that fine, but if you hate FSX and anything to do with it, even though you aparently own it, why bother with these threads and expressing your disappointment in it? If hated something, namely a game or a sim, I would probably wouldn't waste my time using it or participating in forum topics regarding the said subject.

You are overestimating my emotional patterns. But I'm impressed, anyway. ;D
