KLAS texture loading
« on: November 13, 2010, 03:59:08 pm »
I have almost all of the FSDT scenery and love the detail. For some reason, the texture loading at Las Vegas seems to be slow. In other words, when I'm approaching KLAS, and I turn to look towards the airport, there is a pause as the textures load. I don't have this problem with the FSX version or any of the other scenery that I have. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Regards,
Mike W.

As already explained in this forum, FS9 doesn't support multicore systems, and this is much apparent for texture loading, since it's done on the same core as the main thread so, either the simulation is slowed down when loading textures, or the textures appears with a delay. As you noticed, the FSX version doesn't have this issue, because FSX is able to load textures in the background using other cores that always have spare processor time to use without slowing the main simulation.

You can try with the textures resizer posted here.

Umberto,
Thanks for the explanation. It's still great scenery, just a little annoying with the pauses.

Yes, I have and while it's better, there is still the pauses to load textures.

Yes, I have and while it's better, there is still the pauses to load textures.

Then it's not a problem of the scenery itself, but rather the fact that it stays in an area where there's already a lot of different textures, since the default KLAS is quite dense on its own, and the two combined don't work well with the fact that FS9 can't load textures in multithreading, like FSX.

As you already noticed, the FSX version doesn't have this issue so, the real problem is FS9, when it was released more than 7 years ago, no sceneries were as complex.

Umberto,
I figured it had as much to do with the surrounding scenery as anything. KLAS has the custom textures for the hotels on the strip and I'm sure that plays a big part in performance.
