Except today [Tuesday] is the 3rd.. Missed it by a day But, still worth taking a pause to remember anyway.. Woops.. It was actually Monday night when I posted it, but I was thinking it was Tuesday, lol. Actually it was so late at night that I posted it, that it may have actaully been Tues. None the less, they were talking about it on the local news on Sun and Mon. What a horrible looking accident. One guy on the news said that he rushed to the crash site to help and saw a lady sitting in her seat, clutching her purse and he asked her if she was ok? She didn't reply, so he asked her again and she still said nothing. It was then that he realised that she had already passed. What a horrible thing to have in your memory for the rest of your life. That is very horrible. you just reminded me a a very weired vivid dream, I had years ago were I saw in airliner crash and I as I went running to help. all I saw was that everyone was dead in all of the cabin windows was something like a 767 or 757. they looked like zombies very bad dream still remember it. I could imagine the nightmare that person had. but Im glade the memorial is in the scenery that was very nice Umberto.

That's a pretty cool find. I had no idea that there had even been another airport on the south end of DFW.

The map states that the airport was to be closed once DFW was opened. Dallas Love is southeast of DFW, not directly South...nor that close.

Negative, It is Greater Southwest Airport, which was operating until DFW opened. There is still evidence of it today if you look on the northeast corner of highway 183 and 360, you'll see the remnants of the runway threshold for the main N/S runway. Dallas Love Field is East Southeast of DFW, much closer to downtown Dallas. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greater_Southwest_International_AirportCheers, Cameron

Yep, Amon Carter Blvd sits where the old runway 18/36 was at GSW. It's repaved and everything, but it still looks like a runway if you really look at it..
GSW was only about a mile South of where DFW is. Dallas Love is about 11 miles East-Southeast of DFW.

A great find for sure. For many years their were discussions about building a joint regional airport and DFW certaintly adressed the needs of Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex.

Srrms to me that they should've expanded and renovated GSW instead of building a new one right beside it. Makes about as much sense as sports teams building new stadiums across the street from the old ones.

It depends on the situation;Chicago Midway Internaional for example is land locked,so any attempt to to make the runway longer would require major changes around the neighboorhood and buying property, reroute of streets etc. Midway is a square mile when first built and not much consideration for more land in future needs. Soldier Field was renovated but with mixed results to some. Greater Southwest could have been expanded however looking on maps from that time would indicate some relocation of roads and such etc.

Well having a new stadium have advantages over an old one even if you renovated, A new stadium would have to be built anyway.

Next time you are on a commercial flight you can still see the north end of rwy 18 with faded paint and all. If seated on the left side launching on current day 18L you'll see the whole north runway complex (taxiway and runway) about a quarter mile north of HWY183. As a was previously remarked it is now used as Amon Carter Blvd. Google Maps also has the imagery.
