Add-on Manager default folder
« on: September 20, 2021, 03:44:26 am »
Why does GSX automatically create a Add-on Manager folder in C:\Program Files (x86) when that folder has previously been deleted and removed from the recycle bin. No other FSDT programs/Airports are installed and yet as soon as the download completes all 6 .bin parts and the installation splash screen appears an Add-on Manager is instantly created and the browse button is greyed out and the default path of C:\Program Files (x86)\Add-on Manager appears greyed out. I want to install GSX in a separate all encasing folder Add-on folder. Is this big brother saying we know best and you will use our default? Is there a path in the registry that needs amending/deleting. I previously had GSX installed at the default location but uninstalled it using Windows Control panel and the Add-on Manager folder was deleted by the uninstall and also the Documents\GSX installer folder.

Try installing something from FSDreamteam, then uninstall it. When it asks if you want to remove the Add-on Manager, select yes.

Is this big brother saying we know best and you will use our default?

Big Brother is preventing you to make a mess and install some FSDT product in one folder, and others in another folder, which is what could possibly happened if we allowed you to freely choose the destination at each installation.

Instead, the freedom to choose a destination for the FSDT folder HAS been given to you when you installed the FIRST FSDT product on that system, the installer asked to choose a destination, which can be anywhere and on ANY drive, and indicated that all subsequent FSDT installation would end up there.

This because our products share many files and they are designed to stay together.

It doesn't matter *where* but, they MUST stay together, because the Updater expects them to be in the same folder.

And instead of having a big mess of duplicated shared files spread everywhere wasting previous drive space, we have everything tidy in one single place, with no wasted space and less complexity in the registry and the updater ( we would have to use multiple registry keys to indicate where each product is, with the Updater tracking all of them across multiple drives and folders ). This way is cleaner, simpler and less prone to failures, because we only have one place to look at.

That's why our installers correctly force to install every FSDT product AFTER THE FIRST ONE on the same folder you initially chose freely.

If you don't like you initial choice anymore, you can Undo it by Uninstalling them ALL, and reply YES to the question "Do you want to remove the Addon Manager ? which is made during the Uninstall process.

Note that, while replying YES to the above question is only required once ( but it won't make any difference if you reply YES on every Uninstaller ), you still need to Uninstall and Reinstall ALL FSDT products, because if their path changes, all relevant files in the supported simulators must be updated too, and this is done by the installer, since every simulator requires a different method and acts on different files, be it the scenery.cfg and fsx.cfg in FSX/P3D123, the add-on.xml in P3D V4/5 or the creation of Symbolic links to the Community folder in MSFS 2020.

And, as explained in many threads that asked the same thing, NONE of this will have ANY effect on your activation. You are allowed an unlimited amount of Uninstall/Reinstall, as long the PC is the same and no major hardware changes or no Windows reformats happen between each reinstall.
