Warning, the video is not for the faint of heart. It includes massive death and distruction. But the little airplanes escape from Los Angeles is totally awesome!!  ;D

Not only that but, that was Santa Monica airport, in the direction they were flying, they would have been over the ocean in less than 1 minute @ 250KIAS. Instead, they wind up in Downtown LA seconds later which is 25 miles in the oppsite direction...

I noticed the lack of altitude gain as well but looking closer ,all around them was collapsing into the earth or more like the ocean. Gotta love that scifi. :o

No, no, it makes perfect sense.  John Cusack made the pilot take off before he reached a safe takeoff speed, so he only got off the ground because he was in ground effect.  It's difficult to increase your airspeed and climb out at the same time if you're too slow, which is why it takes him so long to gain altitude.  Also, it looks like the ground is rising up (prior to sinking into the sea) which would make things still harder.

Who knew a Rolland Emmerich film could stand such scrutiny?  ;D Also, I'm not sure what the plane is - maybe a Twin Comanche?

Not a turbo prop.  Its a Cessna 340A/B  http://www.controller.com/listings/aircraft-for-sale/CESSNA-340A/1978-CESSNA-340A/1145677.htm
