Question related to the GSX PBR Update Preview 2
« on: April 24, 2019, 02:39:43 pm »
Hi Umberto,

great work!

My questions are related to the video you have posted.

1) Is it going to be possible to add a bigger banner to the jetways? Some jetways are covered entirely by that banner, not just by a "small ribbon"

2) Where those images are going to be saved? For example when we're creating a shareable config for an airport, is there going to be some automated way how to add a custom logos to that as well?

Many thanks!

We thought about it.

The issue is, we made the logos with a no-too-large dimension, because users already complained they couldn't see passengers on solid jetways, so we fear that, by making logos too large, people would then complain the logo would cover passengers on crystal jetways too, so they never get a chance to see them!

Another reason was that, before the new DirectX-based logos, adding new logo models in different sizes, would made the number of repaints combinations to explode, because each logo variant would have to be multiplied by the number or logo repaints so, in the previous version (and in FSX is still like that), we already had 470 repaints just for the logo ( 47 stock logs multiplied by 10 size variants, which were shared on 90 different jetway models ) so, each *single* new logo dimension would have added 47 new repaints to the sim.

And the more repaints you add, the more time it takes for the sim to start and to display the airplane selection page.

Now that, thanks to DirectX-based logo, we removed about 7000 repaints, and they won't explode anymore when the number models increase, I guess it will be more feasible to add more logo sizes to choose from, although we might not be able to release it in *this* update.

Of course we thought about ease of sharing. In fact, most of the work we did (other than PBR), was to make sharing easier.

When you create a custom operator, after you pick the source PNG/JPG image, GSX will convert it in .DDS and will copy to a folder in your %APPDATA%\Virtuali\GSX folder, for example, the logo for Manchester airport, which originally was a .PNG in the Users\Pictures folder, ended up here:

%APPDATA%\Virtuali\GSX\texture\jetwaylogo\texture.manchester_airport

And the catering, here:
%APPDATA%\Virtuali\GSX\texture\catering\texture.alpha_lsg_catering

So, assuming you wanted to share this customization, it would be enough to create a .ZIP file containing the .INI file for the airport at the root level, with the two custom folders zipped together under it so, when it gets uncompressed on another users system under %APPDATA%\Virtuali\GSX, it will expand with the 2 new textures folders, which would merge to any other custom texture folders the user might already have in his system.

The only thing you should take care of, is if exactly the same name is used for the same texture by two different users, they would both work, but you cannot possibly know in advance which one might be the "best" one. An image might refer to an old logo, or two images with the same name might refer to the same logo, but one might looks better, because of resolution, compression, editing skill, etc.
