Annoying VAS issues
« on: April 11, 2017, 03:56:49 pm »
I almost made a full flight from FlyTampa KTPA to fsdreamteam KIAH, in live weather mode. I wanted to get the full effect of cloud coverage, so I made sure to deactivate all scenery except for the two airports I was flying to and from, as recommended by the guys at FLIGHTBEAM when I spoke to them about the use VAS hit I got flying into KSFO where my computer just froze and crashed. Kept all my settings modest, but set cloud density to max as recommended by AS16. No issues what so ever, except as I was coming into my final approach, just clearing below the cloud deck at around 4,000 feet. That's when I stated hearing the bells warning me of low VAS usage. I know it's time to think about upgrading my CPU, and memory sticks, but until then, what else can I do? I was flying the Aerosoft Airbus A320, with FS2Crew, and AS16. I had airline traffic at 10%, GA traffic off, and road traffic at 5%, just enough to have a little realism as I was coming down to land at Houston, but never got there.

I feel your pain. I just flew KSAN to KIAH in the aerosoft a320 and had a fatal error about 6000ft as i was nearing final approach. This is my first flight to an FSDT airport on my new computer (I put off installing my FSDT and Flightbeam sceneries as long as I could because of the add on manager issues) and I have been using FSX on my computer for 3 months already. This was my first CTD on this PC. I'm sure its just a coincidence tho  ::)

I'm not really sure of the point to this thread. FSX/P3d being 32bit is like filling up a glass of water. It can only handle so much before it overflows.

The point is that I've done all I can to make sure I don't overload the sim with unnecessary scenery or other programs that are not relevant to the flight I'm flying, and still get crushed by VAS. Case and point, FLIGHTBEAM KSFO is a killer if you also use Orbx Northern California and any of the surrounding airports like San Carlos. If I disable Orbx scenery, no more problems completing my flight into San Francisco. That was a solution to that airport, but what is the solution for KIAH is what I want to know if I disable not just Orbx, but every other scenery in the world except for the two I'm flying to and from, and still can't complete the flight. That's my point. Interesting enough is that all other FSDT airports I have, I'm not having this issue when I do the same thing.

I totally understand, VAS issues are a major pain in the arse. That being said, it's not KIAH that's doing it so much as the overall load in the sim. It's easy enough to blame the last addon that essentially pushed the sim over the vas limit, but that's just not terribly logical in how it all adds up. Most people, myself included can fly from FB SFO to IAH or vise versa for instance in the NGX or AS Bus with AS etc and not oom. Now, certain other pairings I know my P3D setup will OOM, but I've never had to disable any scenery when flying. I'm just not sold on the theory that it's all loaded into the sim even though you aren't flying in that area. My question as to the point of the thread was more aimed at was it blaming KIAH or just irked in general with the OOM issues that plague some users more than others.

Of all the recent sceneries we made, KIAH is one of the less memory-consuming one. As Dave correctly said, it's just wrong blaming any single addon for exhausting VAS, it's always the combination of everything you use which consume the limited memory a 32 bit app can address.
