extremely low frames
« on: December 03, 2008, 04:48:16 am »
Ugh, I am getting increasingly frustrated. I can't seem to get good FPS at all. Anything above 10.

Core2Duo E6750 @ 2.75ghz
8800GTX
4gb RAM
Vista 32

I'm getting excellent frames at other airports (aerosoft frankfurt, heathrow), full traffic with 15-20 fps. But here, just can't manage it.

Any ideas?

Below are the frame rates I'm getting at JFK, system is:

C2D E6700, 2.66 no overclock
8800 GTX no overclock
4GB - Vista 32

Original screens were taken at 1600x1200, 4x FSAA, 16x Anisotropic filtering. They are just resized in Photoshop to post them and slightly sharpened to overcome the jpg compression and make the fps counter readable

MS Default JFK - no AI = 41.0 fps
http://www.virtualisoftware.com/binaries/images/jfk_fps/kjfk_default_fps1.jpg

FSDT JFK - no AI = 33.5 fps
http://www.virtualisoftware.com/binaries/images/jfk_fps/fsdt_jfk_fps1.jpg

Aerosoft EGLL - no AI = 26.2 fps
http://www.virtualisoftware.com/binaries/images/jfk_fps/egll_fps.jpg

Obviously, no settings were changed, just switch locations.

This is the scenery impact comparing to default and to a similarly complex scenery like EGLL. Testing without AI it's the only way to compare different sceneries, because otherwise you'll end up comparing the AI models impact.

However, I've put some screenshots with AI as well:

FSDT JFK with AI at 50% = 20.3 fps
http://www.virtualisoftware.com/binaries/images/jfk_fps/jfk_fps_50ai.jpg

FSDT JFK with AI at 100% = 13.1 fps
http://www.virtualisoftware.com/binaries/images/jfk_fps/jfk_fps_100ai.jpg

So, the only thing that can really slow down the sim are the AI, not the scenery.

Note, that at JFK we HAVE airplane shadows turned ON. Unfortunately, we can't compare it with EGLL, because that one doesn't supports airplane shadows with FS9 AI models (a problem we had in Zurich but not in KORD/JFK), so I had to turn airplane shadows off to see AI at EGLL

Aerosoft EGLL with 50% AI - shadows off = 17.0 fps
http://www.virtualisoftware.com/binaries/images/jfk_fps/egll_50ai_noshadows.jpg

Aerosoft EGLL with 100% AI - shadows off = 12.7 fps
http://www.virtualisoftware.com/binaries/images/jfk_fps/egll_fps_100ai_noshadows.jpg

Of course, if we turn shadows off at JFK, we get better fps:

FSDT JFK with AI at 50% . shadows off = 23.0 fps
http://www.virtualisoftware.com/binaries/images/jfk_fps/jfk_fps_50ai_noshadows.jpg

FSDT JFK with AI at 100% . shadows off = 18.6 fps
http://www.virtualisoftware.com/binaries/images/jfk_fps/jfk_fps_100ai_noshadows.jpg

So, this should clarify how the scenery should perform on a machine very similar to yours and how it compares to a similarly complex scenery like EGLL.

Now, it's impossible to understand why it doens't run well on YOUR machine, without knowing anything of your settings and what other addons you have, what airplane you use, etc. However, with everything else being equal, it's clear that JFK it's faster then EGLL.

Yeah.. interesting results. Something is very screwed up.

As for settings, it's a fresh Windows install, and a fresh FSX install, with SP1 and SP2. Nothing else installed, only JFK and the LDS767. I tested using the default 737 and the LDS. They are about the same. I have aircraft shadows turned on, but turning them off made no difference.. The only tweaks I applied are autogen tweaks, to lower them (1500 trees, 2000 buildings), and a few others which I can't remember right now.

The odd thing is, when I shut off AI off (if I dialed it down to 50%), I only see 1 or 2 fps difference. Maybe it's my video card which is borked? It seems okay in other games.

What AI are you using? I'm using MyTrafficX 5.2 (the latest).

What FSX tweaks do you have applied?
This has been frustrating me because I have had the feeling I'm getting lower IQ and FPS than I should be with my system. Overclocking never made any difference at all.

Check out this program I am seeing:

Gates are missing, or just floating mid-air. I'm getting about 25 fps no AI. The gate I am parked at is backwards. If you look forward a bit, its randomly in nowhere.

No wonder you had low fps. From your screenshot, you have 2 sceneries for JFK, probably another AFCAD. These usually come with Traffic packages (MyTraffic maybe?), use an AFCAD edit utility, like the AFX Trial for example, to search for all afcad for a specific ICAO.

Fixed that problem, up to about 30. Once I add traffic, down to about 5.
What traffic are you using? 13fps @ 100% is still playable.

I have low frames at KJFK in FSX (to compare, I get about 14fps at LSZH and LSGG @ 50% Traffic, and it's ok for me), but 7fps at New York is quite low.

So I think it is possible, I have multiple afcad files for this/these fsdt airports. I downloaded the AFX Demo. What should I do now? And if I find more than one afcad for the mentioned airports, which one do I have to delete?

Thanks in advance

I just looked in my Addon Scenery folder, and found the AFCAD.

my traffic x afcad? do you still remember how it is called? and if i delete this one, will AI still work properly?

edit: i changed to settings: fps to unlimited and water to mid1x, bloom was already off. the frames are now in the glider (or how this ugly thing is called) and my wilco 320bus at about 15-20fps and that's really ok! Bought JFK 2 hours ago and all I can say: Another GREAT SCENERY from you guys.

I'm still wondering if a duplicate afcad could improve the performance even more. I don't know if it has something to do with the afcad file, but I recognized that the default buildings in LSZH have been changed due to mytrafficX (before I bought the lszh addon).

The AFCAD was called "kjfk". I just searched for it using the windows search, any *.bgl files and then looking through them

MyTrafficX AFCADS are in the mytraffic\scenery folder which is inside the main FSX folder. The file you want to disable is called "BR2_KJFK.bgl"

To switch the file off rather than deleting the file just add .off or .passive to the end of the filename so that it looks like this "BR2_KJFK.bgl.off" or "BR2_KJFK.bgl.passive" the file is now disabled.

Cheers,
Andy.

I renamed those 3 files (lszh, lsgg and kjfk), the traffic still works perfectly and... I get better frames.

25 to 38 at LSGG and LSZH
15 to 22 at KJFK

Thank you!
