Title: Work in Progress / 14
Post by: virtuali on September 01, 2011, 05:51:47 pm
Here's the Kinetic Light Installation in operation at KLAX

The color of the lighted pylons changes, of course, and aren't random, but they have different choreography programs running (curtesy of Couatl, our Python scripting engine), the screenshot shows the "Stars and Stripes" program, which is usually reserved for special occasions (like 9/11), but we liked it, so we run it every day.

There are other programs running, and each program is selected at random, which makes for an interesting sight...

P.S.
Before anyone asks, there's no "Work in Progress / 13", reasons for this should be fairly obvious :)

Glad this is the last preview. It will be nice to finally have another airport on the western side of the US to fly into besides SFO and LAS.

Yes my misunderstanding. When you said:

P.S.
Before anyone asks, there's no "Work in Progress / 13", reasons for this should be fairly obvious :)

I wasn't thinking of the unlucky #13 and frankly didn't even notice what number this was, hence when you said there would be no Work in Progress / 13, I though you were implying that it was due to pretty much being complete, although in hindsight that would have been Work in Progress / 15.

Guess I just got excted for a second. ;D

Ah ok I get it.  Although, someone wanting to commit suicide by jumping from the 14th floor may be a bit disappointed when he lands sooner than expected.  C'mon, you know what floor you're really jumping from....  :P

Funny you should say that. I saw a video years ago of two college kids bungee jumping off a building and they didn't account for the missing 13th floor, hence their cords were a floor too long. Both jump off the building in front of a crowd of fellow students and hit the ground face first killing both, probably instantly. They impacted so hard some of their teeth were found 10 feet away from their heads.

Well honestly, that's their own stupidity..  Regardless of how many floors a building claims to have, that doesn't affect its actual height.  If I'm about to bungee off a building, I think I'd base my bungee chord off of the height of the building.....

Is it that confusing? Of course, it's my home airport, so I won't have a problem with it. I always liked Schiphol best, as a passenger. Always feels homely, more so than many of the other airports I have been.

N.Y or not... The release of KLAX would be a day of 'cheer' - so to speak! And quite frankly there's nothing to cheer about, with regards to 9/11.
I just don't think it would be appropriate in that regard...

Anyway... just my honest opinion.

Hoping for a release soon! :)

Very well put! That wouldn't be very fitting to release on that day. Don't know why you would hope for a release on that day either. A sim scenery should be the last thing on your mind on 9/11.

A sim scenery should be the last thing on your mind on 9/11.

Why?  Observe a moment of silence around 9:00am when the strikes on the towers occured, then fire up the sim and go fly.  RW flying will continue on 9/11, no reason our virtual flying shouldn't.

Continuing day to day operations as if 9/11 never happened will show them that the United States will not be brought to their knees.  If the country cowers and shuts down, the terrorists win.

Being Military, I obviously have different feelings than you. It shouldn't be treated as "just another day" and where did you get shutting down the country out of not releasing a sim scenery on that day ??? I agree that daily operations should continue, but like what was stated earlier, why make it a day of celebration by releasing the scenery on that day? Just release it the day before or after, if ready. Oh and by the way, the United States was brought to its knees that day. Just my 2c

Tell me, do you all refrain from making a "happy purchase" on the anniversary of Pearl Harbor?  Is it a day to take some time and reflect on what happened and those that died?  Absolutely!  Is it a day to not go about your business?  Absolutely not.  Clearly the government also agrees or this day would be a federal holiday.

I agree with that... BUT I don't feel it would be appropriate, to release a scenery BECAUSE it's 9/11 anniversary... There's no connection between a release of a scenery and 9/11! Therefore, I personally think, it would be inappropriate...

The idea was originally brought up, as a suggestion to release the scenery BECAUSE of that day. And that idea, is just distasteful IMO...

To that, I agree.  There is no reason to pick 9/11 as a date for release; essentially, if it is ready before 9/11, don't hold off on release just for 9/11.  As you said, there is no relation between 9/11 and a KLAX scenery.  That said, if it is ready to be released right on 9/11, then there is no reason to hold off just because it is 9/11.

It was a very horrible and tragic day for the United States on 9/11/01. However, The ground work was laid to fight back to find those who would do harm to the US and Allies AND most recent major victory, Osama Bin Laden was put down by our Special Warfare Forces. In all saying take a moment to reflect on the moment when the first World Trade Tower was hit this Sunday and afterwards go about your normal daily life.

Yes! I totally agree with that! I was only objecting towards the idea of releasing the scenery BECAUSE of 9/11...
Should it be ready the 9th of september 2011 - then of course, by all means, release it. But don't connect the two events.

I agree with the others. It was a tragic day that a lot of people lost their lives, but I dont think it should have any bearing on what flight sim titles are released or not released. Businesses dont close on 9/11, the airports remain open for flights, etc. I can understand if it had just happened, but it's been so long ago I dont think that it's disrespectful to release a flight sim addon due to that reason.

It cracks me up about how mad people get when a scenery is not going to come out for their old FS.  LAX may be outdated for Cloud 9 but poor KSLC, CYVR , KBWI and so forth never to see a single payware company touch them, instead interest only in redoing outdated work.  I have FSX and FS9 on my rig probably never to be touched again but with $500. dollars probably invested.  Stop buying FS addons and save for a new rig! lets all move to fsx change is good and gets only better, imagine the day when flight comes out and FS9 will be gone just as fast as a default concorde!  ;)  You never got this mad when your cassette tapes or VHS collection moved to Discs did you?  ;D

I think speaking for Microsoft Flight is a bit too much as only some developers have been told/shown what's up with that and all are under NDA so lips are sealed. It's not even the same development team I understand. So other then a few videos and pictures it's hard to tell if third party developers will move in that direction or want too. For all we know it might be geared for a larger audience witch might hurt those who strive for realism as aviation realism is a small niche community. It's might even entail development techniques like tessellation, etc witch would be new to FS developers I would say. That might be going too far on my behalf but to say what devs can do or cannot do; but saying Flight will replace something when we don't even know what Flight is is going to replace is maybe going to far on your behalf. I'd LOL if we saw a need to play and have to have Windows Live as that has arcade written all over it. They even tried to make FSX a bit arcade elements adding "missions"! What fun and realistic those were, but from a marketing aspect it might get a non hardcore simmer or first timer to buy the game.

Heck, if I was Microsoft I'd me kinda mad my 50 to 80 dollar "game" (depending on how you use it) have a economy of it's own where one airport can cost as much as the original game all of witch I don't see a dime.

For once I have to agree with Sir Issac.  There is no reason NOT to release this scenery on 9/11. That had nothing to do with LA...at the least. We can morn. But that doesn't mean we cant buy.

I thought LAX was supposed to release in August? Can we expect a September release, how much further to go?

With 14 WIP threads, how much more can there be?  HNL only had 11 WIP threads, and Dallas had 8.

Exactly. Have they not shown everything they need to show? (I was waiting forthe night lighting, but that was the last preview I was expecting.)

My guess is they are putting on the finishing touches right now and we should see it soon for FSX, then start hearing about the possibilities of a backport to FS9.
