Title: Cannot install..... AGAIN **SOLVED**
Post by: prdant on February 12, 2012, 11:16:38 pm
I purchased the GSX product and was unable to install the couatl addon. Umberto worked with me and finally another user suggested the stand alone addon manager which cured the issue. I used it as a test at YSSY and found it quite nice. Today I loaded a flight fromKLAX - KLAS and it was there in the dropdown. I have reopened FSX just now and the couatl addon is gone. I have re-installed three times now with no success. I am a patient man but I am 65 now and running out of time. If anyone can help it would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

You shouldn't reinstall whenever you have a problem, let alone three times, I don't know how you fixed your previous issue but, the last report I have from you was this one:

http://www.fsdreamteam.com/forum/index.php?topic=5775.msg51780#msg51780

That seems to indicate Couatl.exe was missing from your disk, and perhaps it's the usual antivirus error, that has removed it. No amount of reinstallation can fix this, if you don't act on your antivirus properly, it can keep cause problems.

As I've already explained in the previous thread, the correct reinstallation procedure when your antivirus is at fault, is as follow:

DOWNLOAD AND INSTALL with the antivirus entirely OFF

- Uninstall GSX. Reply YES when asked if you want to remove the Addon Manager and the Couatl Engine. Reply YES to both questions.

- TURN OFF your antivirus. Don't just exit from its interface, but turn off the real time protection. Actual wording changes between products, however, it's the option to scan every file that gets open in real time, without user intervention.

- Reinstall GSX with the Antivirus TURNED OFF. Don't launch FSX yet.

- Configure the antivirus to exclude the following files from scanning:

YourFSXFolder\bglmanx.dll
YourFSXFolder\fsdreamteam\Couatl\couatl.exe

YourFSXFolder it's usually C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Microsoft Flight Simulator X, if you installed it in the default folder.

- Now you can turn the antivirus back on, and launch FSX.

- Check you are seeing BOTH the "Addon Manager" menu AND the "Couatl powered products" menu under the "Addons" menu

Even if the antivirus WAS already configured to exclude the files from scanning, you STILL have to turn it off when downloading and installing, because those exclusion are only valid in the FSX folder, but the antivirus can still block the program when its being installed.

Thanks Umberto, I have followed your instructios to a tee and as of now I still have no couatl addon. For the one hour it did work it was quite nice.... I for one am stumped. I may try rebooting my PC but  I am doubtful that this is an issue

Sorry to say that this was unsuccessful as well. I get all of the choices to answer yes to but it just doesn't work for me.

try to enable The Simconnect diagnostic mode: open notepad, and copy the following text:

[SimConnect]
level=normal
console=1
RedirectStdOutToConsole=1
OutputDebugString=1
; file=c:\simconnect%03u.log
; file_next_index=0
; file_max_index=9

Save the file as SIMCONNECT.INI in this folder:

Documents And Settings\YOUR LOGIN NAME\Documents\Microsoft Flight Simulator X Files

At the next FSX launch, you should see a text window with diagnostic message, that should tell what's going wrong. Let me know what you are getting, so we can have an idea what's happening.

Only the first few lines are important: if the window scrolls too fast, you can use the "Pause" key on the keyboard to pause the scrolling. Post here only the first 10 lines or so of the diagnostic, but it's important you post the first 10 lines.

Thanks Umberto, I will try this tomorrow.

After looking at the installation Guide I do not see any mention of Windows 7 64bit. Since I am having the install issue could Windows 7 be the issue?? Grasping at anything now, still plan to run the simconnect script later today.
Thanks

After looking at the installation Guide I do not see any mention of Windows 7 64bit.

That's what most users have, and what we use too.

Thanks, I suspected as much. Besides adding the .dll and exe to my firewall allow list, any other virus protection tips?

Have you tried enabling the simconnect diagnostic ?

I will try after work, darn work interfering with fun.
This is what I posted back from the last time on Feb 10th

It is hard to catch becaue the first lines deal with PMDG. But after several tries I did manage to get
0.28917 Exe Launch Failed: GetLastError=0x000000D8 Path="fsdreamteam\couatl\couat1.exe" CommandLine=""
1.47103 DLL Loaded: Path="bglmanx.dll" Version=2.9.0.1"

Hope this points to something

I read that one, but I would like to get an updated report with the most current version. Are you using the Ati Tray Tools perhaps.

I saw that post too, not that I know of. I don't have a ATI video card, I have:

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 550 Ti 1024MB GDDR5

I sure we'll figure it out, you have been very helpful.

Here you go.

0.00000 SimConnect version 10.0.61259.0

0.30627 Exe Launch Failed: GetLast Error=0x000000D8 Path="fsdreamteam\couatl\cpuatl.exe" CommandLine=""

Goes on from there checking the flight sim version etc which all pass. I have no other problems with PMDG aircraft or FSUIPC.

Hope this helps your investigation.

If this is really the diagnostic log, and not a typo you made when copying it from to the forum, it's no wonder couatl.exe doesn't load: if FSX is trying to load cpuatl.exe instead of couatl.exe, it's because you hand-edited your EXE.XML, and mistyped cpuatl.exe ...
Title: Re: Cannot install..... AGAIN
Post by: prdant on February 14, 2012, 02:02:32 pm
Yes, I had to hand type it... so it is a typo. I think one of the most confusing parts is that I ran a flight starting at KLAX and couatl was in the dropdown, a little more than two hours later I loaded the same flight because I was practicing with the PMDG 737 and couatl was gone from the dropdown which brings us to this point. It should be noted that FSX was not shutdown nor was the PC restarted. I simply loaded a saved flight.

When this happen, open the Task manager, and check if you have two copies of the Couatl.exe process.
Title: Re: Cannot install..... AGAIN
Post by: prdant on February 14, 2012, 02:24:06 pm
Unfortunately because of the time difference I will not be at my PC until you are done for the day. I did note that after I did not see couatl in the dropdown that there was no couatl.exe listed under processes.
I appreciate that you are trying to resolve this issue, but I have followed all steps that you have provided and we are no closer to a resolution.
When I get home tonight I will try one more time to re-install following the steps that you have provided. One question though is if I completely uninstall should I be installing the GSX program AND the stand alone manager or just the stand alone. So far I have been doing both.
I have no doubt that GSX is a great looking program because I did see it work for one test and one flight. I would, however, appreciate it that if we cannot solve this issue by the weekend that I be refunded my purchase price at which time I will deactivate and remove.

I uninstalled and ran the standalone manager. No anti virus on answered yes to both of the questions and startyed the sim with simconnect. I immediately saw the error that the exe failed but allowed the sim to start up and there was no couatl. I went into the folder and clicked on the couatl.exe and got this:

This version is not compatable with operating system.... what next??

What exe, and what error, exactly ? Please copy the simconnect diagnostic line, and don't type it by hand, use copy & paste, you can selecte

You can't start Couatl.exe manually, it won't work. However, it should NOT give that error, the expected behavior if you launch it manually, is to simply not start without any messages.

If you read this old post:

http://www.fsdreamteam.com/forum/index.php?topic=3913.msg40500#msg40500

When I tried to run the COUATl program manually from the file it stated that I have the wrong version for my  operating system which is Windows 7  64Bit

The same user replied after a while:

Lets cancel my last comment I found out by reading the last exception report on my antivirus that it was indeed couatl.exe which was being blocked. I made sure that Web threats was turned off and now everything is fine: couatl shows up and all the bldgs are there!!

So, it seems your antivirus is still interfering, it wouldn't be the first time we hear of antivirus so defective they keep blocking files even after you excluded them from scanning.

Error 0xD8 means

"The version of %1 is not compatible with the version you're running. Check your computer's system information to see whether you need a x86 (32-bit) or x64 (64-bit) version of the program, and then contact the software publisher."

Which is exactly the same message you would get by manually launching, which should never happen in the first place, and it really doesn't happen.

Are you maybe running FSX in the "XP Compatibility mode" or any of the other "Compatibility" modes ? If yes, turn them them all immediately, they are very well known to cause any sort of problems, and it's not how FSX should be run under Vista/Windows7, and it's not how it's installed by default.

Right click on the FSX.EXE file, and turn off everything in the "Compatibility"  tab. And, be sure you haven't done the same for Couatl.exe

Thanks, I will check this tonight when I get home. I did verify couatl.exe during the troubleshooting yesterday the compatability box is unchecked. I will verify FSX, but it is worth noting that FSX was installed after I moved from 32bit to 64 bit Windows 7. I have not had any issues with any other programs, PMDG.. FSUIPC.. Radar Contact.. FSCommander or FDC Cockpit Live. I have a number of games installed as this was built as a gaming machine. Can you explain why it would run twice and disappear which is what happened and what has caused this extensive thread?
Many Thanks

Here you go, also I did everything except uninstall my virus protection:

You need to TURN OFF your antivirus when downloading and installing and you have to configure it to exclude the following files from scanning before turning it back on:

YourFSXFolder\bglmanx.dll
YourFSXFolder\fsdreamteam\Couatl\couatl.exe

If you don't do this, it's also possible your antivirus is corrupting the couatl.exe. There's no need to uninstall the antivirus, but you need to turn it off when installing and configure it properly before launching FSX.

I did as you requested several days ago, I was just reinterating that I have been following your steps, short of uninstalling. I had the firewall and virus checking disable during the download and install process. I also verified that the files were still in the exclusion list. With not wanting to beat a dead horse, I still don't understand why it worked twice then stopped. I did not change anything, just attempted another flight and couatl was gone.

Thanks

Right click on the Couatl.exe on your hard drive, select "Properties", select the "Digital signature" tab and click "Details". Is the digital sign still reported as valid ?

I have tried again with the same results.

That only leaves the antivirus interfering as the last possible explanation,

Quote
I am running 64bit windows 7 pro. Is there a couatl.exe that is made for 64bit?

You said that several times, we ALL run Windows 7 64 (or at least, most of us do), the problem IS NOT the Couatl.exe file being "wrong", a 64 bit OS is perfectly capable to run 32 bit apps. ALL OF FSX is 32 bit! There's nothing in FSX that is made for a 64 bit OS.

The real meaning of that message:

Quote
Check your computer's system information to see whether you need a x86 (32-bit) or x64 (64-bit) version of the program

Is not really saying you are trying to run an executable made for 32 bits in a 64 bit OS, because this works normally, and it's how 99% of your installed software works now. Is saying that, the executable is not valid NEITHER for a 32 bit or a 64 bit, as if it was written for an entirely different CPU.

Since this is not obviously the case, because mostly everybody nowadays uses Couatl.exe, which is a standard 32 bit app just like any other FSX and any other FSX addon out there is (it's not even *possible* to write a 64 bit FSX addon ) under Windows 7 x64, the only possible explanation is that either your antivirus is STILL interfering without warning, like in this case:

http://www.fsdreamteam.com/forum/index.php?topic=3913.msg40500#msg40500

Quote
When I tried to run the COUATl program manually from the file it stated that I have the wrong version for my  operating system which is Windows 7  64Bit

OR, if you search Google for that message, there are literally *millions* of hits, and many of them suggests this can also be caused by a REAL virus instead.

Ok, here are the results. I decided to completely uninstall my security, gsx and cleaned the registry. Installed the stand alone installer and stepped through as normal. Launced FSX and coualt was present. I close FSX reinstalled my anti virus , started FSX and couatl is still present. I cannot figure what could have been running in the background but there certainly must have been. I hope that this is the end of it and thanks for your tremendous support, I know I have been a pain in your butt. I will be purchasing KLAS soon and KLAX.. do you plan on making a Denver??

Perhaps, by removing it and reinstalling, you just "fixed" something with your antivirus. Just for information, which one is ?

Trend Micro Itanium, it has never allowed a virus in the past, but it is obvious that it was running deep undercover.
