Title: Constant CTD's flying flying into ORD from out of area
Post by: ryanbatcund on April 23, 2011, 08:01:52 pm
I've been receiving g3d.dll errors while flying to ORD from somewhere else.  The crash normally occurs when I'm at the range where the scenery loads, but FSX just hangs at this point.

Yet it loads fine if my flight starts at Ohare.  This crash scenario also happens at JFK.

I've updated my video drivers, etc, PC is stable.

I'd put my money on a corrupted AI-plane texture.

Try to fly in with AI-traffic turned off.
If nothing happens - Happy searching the bugger  ::)

Happy Landings

Naw, I'm using default AI traffic.

Could be anything.... stupid Windows 7 - never had more problems with an OS!

Are you able to pinpoint a distance, even approximate, from KORD airport center reference point the crash happen ?

I have been having the same issue for months.  Couldn't find anything specific after troubleshooting.  For me it happens about 25 miles out.

For me it happens about 25 miles out.

Ok, that safely discounts our KORD airport, since its loading range it's exactly 10.0 nm, nothing of it is loaded before that distance. It's either a problem with an AI, or with another addon for that area, like a terrain addon.

I am also having problem flying to KORD. I have tried 3 times from KJFK and FSX CTD when in area of Chicago/ILL. Once it happened about 75 miles out and another on approach. I will deactivate scenery and try again. Here are the results I always receive:

I repeat and confirm, that safely discounts our KORD airport, since its loading range it's exactly 10.0 nm, nothing of it is loaded before that distance. It's either a problem with an AI, or with another addon for that area, like a terrain addon. Fact that it happened once on approach, can simply indicate a problematic AI (if AI is the problem) was closer that time.

Even if you disable the scenery and the problem will not happen, that will not prove the problem was caused by the airport because, if you disable it, another AFCAD (probably the default one) will take place, which will call a different set of AI, or just *less* AI.

I've been getting this again.  Try this... fly around some random area far away from KORD, like NY state.  Then go to KORD.  Mine CTD's when the loading bar starts to load scenery.

This has nothing to do with AI or afcads!  I don't have any other AI (heck it's not even turned on), and the only afcad I would ever have is default.  Are you saying by installing FSDT scenery it doesn't replace the default acfad?  It should...

Anyway is it possible that installing newer scenery is making these errors?  Files conflicting?  I just installed your KDFW and KLAS and that's when I started getting the errors again.

So here's your FSDT folder, and the bgls... any look odd or out of date?  (not pictured is the last number 14 and KORD_sf.bgl)

The only other KORD bgl I have is default, but there is the default chicago.bgl scenery in Microsoft Flight Simulator X\Scenery\NAMC - perhaps that's the conflicting file?

If you are getting a crash when loading scenery, then it's fairly sure it's NOT the airport, but it's a problem with the other terrain around. Our sceneries (at least, 90% of the objects) load AFTER the loading bar, because are not in the BGL files.

Quote
This has nothing to do with AI or afcads!  I don't have any other AI (heck it's not even turned on), and the only afcad I would ever have is default.

AI could be the most *common* cause of a crash, but that doesn't mean it's the only one. The 2nd most common cause, it's the VTP scenery around. For example, here's a post of an user that, like you, initially believed our KJFK was the cause of its crashes, but it turned out to be Ultimate Terrain in his case:

http://www.flightsim.com/vbfs/showthread.php?195815-My-Out-Of-Memory-Error-Solution

Quote
Are you saying by installing FSDT scenery it doesn't replace the default acfad?  It should...

First, it shouldn't, since it's plainly wrong to "replace" the default AFCAD. If you have ONLY the default AFCAD, our will TAKE PRECEDENCE over it, provided of course you left KFJK on a highest scenery layer, which is where its installer puts it by default.

I was saying an entirely different thing about the AFCAD: If the problem WAS related to an AI, you might get the wrong impression of being related to the scenery, because it *might* disappear when uninstalling the JFK airport BECAUSE, in that case the default AFCAD would become active, and it would recall a different set of AI, perhaps not calling the problematic one. That was just an EXAMPLE, in case you'll end up thinking "I've removed the scenery, the crash doesn't happen anymore, so it was the scenery", which is not always the case, if you don't know the whole implications of removing a scenery in relationship to AIs

Quote
Anyway is it possible that installing newer scenery is making these errors?  Files conflicting?  I just installed your KDFW and KLAS and that's when I started getting the errors again.

It's impossible that installing KDFW and KLAS would create a conflict at KORD. If you mix-match Addon Manager version, either you FSX will not start correctly, or the sceneries will not display at all.

In any case, I'll repeat it again:

- The scenery has a range of exactly 10 nm. Any crash happening farther than this, it's guaranteed not be caused by the airport.

- Most of the 3d objects are NOT loaded during the "Loading scenery" progress bar, but they load only AFTER the screen has gone back to normal flying. In fact, there's also a small delay, which means any crash that happens on the progress bar, it's unlikely caused by the airport.

If you can recall *exactly* at which stage of the progress bar the crash happened, it might help understanding which kind of data was being loaded at that time.

Umberto, Thanks for your info. I tend to agree with you that the problem is not caused by KORD scenery however, I would appreciate if you would let this thread continue for a while so that we may find the reason for our mutual problem. I am trying other possible solutions and would like to have a common place to report any success I may have with this.

I just don't see why it couldn't be KORD...  I'm selecting KORD as the place to go to and it crashes.  It never crashes when I go anywhere else, just ORD.  It's has to be some conflict with the scenery.  I'll look at my folders again to find any irregularities.

I also thought of something just a moment ago.  Does any part of your scenery or the manager run in the Users folder?  Win7 is super finicky about file permissions and maybe that's causing a problem?  Example: C:\Users\myusername\AppData\Roaming

Happy News - at least, for me. For  some time I have experienced CTD on flights from KMSY to KJFK or some other place heading east. When I tried from east going west (KJFK to KORD), I got CTD on 3 occasions. I even reinstalled KORD but, no change. After entertaining the idea that maybe it could be some other terrain files, I disabled UTX - under the "TERRAIN" tab, there is an option for "Quick Ultimate Terrain Enable/Disable". After disable, I tried flight from KJFK to KORD again. Upon entering the TOD for KORD, the weather was horrible. Visibility was only 6 miles, and it was raining. It was a demanding time for my CPU, memory and video card. Nevertheless, I safely landed on rwy 14L and taxied to gate, without any CTD's. Now I need to find out what I need to do about UTX - uninstall, reinstall or what?

I wish there was a software routine that ran as part of an program installation to insure the checksums of all the files installed with that addon. At least you would know if all the files were installed to the disk correctly.

For any that maybe having this ghost of a problem, try disabling UTX and try flight again and pls let us know if it worked.

When you are in the KORD area, there's a LOT of other sceneries loaded, apart for our KORD!! The terrain you see around comes from the default scenery and, if you have addons like 3rd party meshes, 3rd party VTP terrain addons, 3rd party photoreal addons, they are all loaded.

If one of these sceneries has a problem in the KORD area, the result would be exactly like you are describing: a crash ONLY in the KORD area, which makes you think the problem it's the airport, when it's not.

If you read the message in the link I've posted on flightsim.com, there was another user that, just like you, initially believed there was a problem with JFK, because he had a crash ONLY at JFK. Turned out to be Ultimate Terrain X

And, if you read the below message from wb2002, he also had a crash at KORD, just like you, and it seems to be fixed by turning off, guess what, Ultimate Terrain X...

That's funny cause I don't seem to have any problem in the Chicago area, and I'm running all sort of different paywares. Besides FSDT KORD, I have FlyTampa's Midway, US CITIES Chicago, UTUSA, REX, and GEX. I fly in real weather, and most of the time it's terrible. But I never had a CTD even when flying heavies like the 747 or Airbus. Perhaps I should try harder to see if I can crash! :o

Don't know if you have solved your problem but my is. I removed UTX and everything associated with it and did new install from fresh new download. Previous install was from scratch (beginning + every update). Latest install required only 2 installs. Perhaps over the many months of defrags, updates and etc, something got corrupted enough to cause my problem. I do not know what problem was but everything is fine now. If you still having problems, let us know.

Good evening...

A longer time ago I was flown the Level-D into KORD and at about 5000ft, short before the FAF, I got a CTD, I thougt it would happen only once. But a few days ago, I flew with the NGX from KBUF (FlyTampas+US Cities Niagara Falls) to Fly Tampas Midway which I've bought a few minutes earlier and on the ILS of Midway I got another CTD. I did the flight once again to see if I can reproduce that bug and what shall I say, I got my CTD. The next try was with US Cities X off, and I won another CTD. The 4th flight was with KORD off and it works, I finally landed at Midway.

What have I done, I made a deinstallation, downloaded the KORD Installer new and installed it. I guess I have it, but once again with KORD activated, I get the next CTD... I was not much away from throwing the computer out of the window, cause it's pretty boring flying the same flight ever and ever...

So tommorow I will switch off the AI Traffic and will give it another try, or is it really Ultimate Terrain X USA? I don't want to deinstall and reinstall it cause I'm a bit affraid of destroying something like the textures in Europe from Ultimate Terrain Europe, or maybe Ground Environment will run into some troubles?

At present for the KORD area I've installed:

- FS Global 2008
- Ultimate Terrain USA X
- Ground Environment X
- US Cities X - Chicago
- FSDT O'hare
- FlyTampas Midway
- and the Ultimate Traffic 2 with 50% AI Traffic

Ok, I did the next try with AI Traffic off and on the ILS 31C on 1000ft I got my CTD. I've tuned the ORD VOR on Nav2 and I was 16.9nm away from the VOR when the CTD happens.

So, Umberto, you said that this could not have something 2 do with ya KORD, but why did everything went fine when I switch KORD off? It must have something 2 do with that. For now I've testet all the stuff I could test.

A strange thing is, that when I will start in the Chicago Area nothing happens, only when I fly into from anywhere else I got the crash. For now, I switch KORD off.

That distance readout proves it's nothing related to the scenery, KORD loading range is exactly 10.0 NM for the main objects, with lots of objects having smaller ranges.

Quote

No, you haven't, you just tried turning AI off, but your own list of addons in the area is quite long as, as you can see from another user post, he stopped having crashes when he removed UTX and reinstalled everything.

Quote
A strange thing is, that when I will start in the Chicago Area nothing happens, only when I fly into from anywhere else I got the crash.

This proves even more clearly the airport is not the problem, since the crash is happening when coming from elsewhere,
before even the scenery loads, and it's not happening when you go directly to the airport which means, what is making the sim crash, is not the airport, but something else that is loaded before it, and might *not* load when you are AT the airport.

Just to be sure, I've just flown a test flight from Champaign to KORD, trying to follow your route, with no problems at all, using default A321, default AI traffic. Only addon installed other than KORD it's X-Class USA.

I'll post my story in their forum, maybe they can produce a hotfix?

You should at least first trying a flight without UTX, and see if the problem is solved.

Hi and sorry for the late answer, I've had a litte less time in the past few days.

Today I made another 2 flights, here are the results.

I've edited my fsx.cfg and turned down a few settings and I've visited Bojotes site and looked for some tweaks. I made the first try and have the frames on to see if the computer will have any problems, but nothing 20 frames and more on the ILS 31C KMDW. 17nm away of ORD VOR, I got my good damn CTD. I guess, 20 frames must be enough and shows that my system has no problem in handling the scenerys. Other scenerys like KJFK (FSDT) in combination with Manhattan X (Aerosoft), or KLAS (FSDT) with US Cities X - Las Vegas (Aerosoft) or even KSFO (Flightbeam) with US Cities X - Frisco (Aerosoft) are running well. So I won't believe that my system can't handle the workflow.

The second unmarked all Ultimate Terrain Entrys I've found in the scenery library and again, at exactly 17nm away of KORD I've get my CTD...

When I turn off FSDT, all is fine... So I've let it off now until someone find the failure.

Here is my new fsx.cfg and I'll show you my scenery.cfg, maybe there is a failure in the sorting of the layers?

Title: Re: Constant CTD's flying flying into ORD from out of area
Post by: virtuali on August 21, 2011, 05:41:40 pm
I guess, 20 frames must be enough and shows that my system has no problem in handling the scenerys

20 fps 17 nm out of KORD is very low.

Quote
The second unmarked all Ultimate Terrain Entrys I've found in the scenery library and again, at exactly 17nm away of KORD I've get my CTD...

Just fisabling the Ultimate terrain entries it's not enough to disable it, because it also modify a lot of default files, the only way to disable it is to use its own setup utility to restore the modifications to the default scenery, and then using its uninstaller to install it.

Until you can properly remove UT, you can't say you have tested with it disabled. I can only repeat and confirm, both that KORD is NOT loaded until 10 NM out AND that, of course, I've tested it making a full flight, and of course no crashes whatsoever. Right now, the only patter we have, that all users that had the crash, had UTX installed so, as I've said in all my previous message, have it properly removed, and try again.

Then I'll leave KORD off....

I'am not interested in reinstall UTX for only one airport... Good to have Midway as an alternative.

Maybe the upcoming (?) update of KORD will run? Who knows....

It's not only one airport, it's only one airport you found, there are thousands of airports in FSX, it's very likely other would also crash, it's just you don't go there to check.

Reinstalling UTX, as you can see from other messages here, has fixed the problem for some users.

Unlikely, since the the problem is not caused by it. As I've said, no objects for KORD are loaded outside 10.0 NM.

I've wrote my problem in the Ultimate Terrain forum, too and it looks like Ultimate Terrain is the problem.

I don't need to uninstall it for testing. Within UT USA there is an option for quick enableing and disabling UT they've said and I disabled it. Touch and go in Midway and finally landed in O'Hare... The problem must be UT USA. Now I wait what the guys will tell me next to do.
