Title: Fueling tanker
Post by: thomasnc41 on December 13, 2007, 04:11:58 pm
I noticed while doing some "Carrier Practice", in the missions section, if I climbed above 4-5 thousand feet the compass pointed to a tanker at 17,000 ft.  Is there a way to air-to-air refuel?  I know the FA 18 has a probe.

The compass can be cycled on/off with the "u" key.  I believe this can only be used during missions.............

Still wondering  ???   Is this a tanker we can use, if so, how??

Thanks, Tom

There's no support for in-flight refueling in Acceleration. I guess the probe was put there for completeness sake, but it's not operational.

OK ... sorry so late to this topic.

The answer to the question is: yes ... you can refuel using the refueling tanker.

Extend your probe (it works) ... and position yourself just below and behind the tanker. Watch your fuel gauge.

Two things you won't see:

1) A hose extending down from the tanker.
2) Your windscreen being cleaned.

On the plus side, they don't charge you for the avgas.  :o

Yes i also got fuel from the tanker when i got close to it from behind, it works. It would be nice to have the option to "call" the tanker when ever i need to refuel in the air just like i have in FS9 with Lago's F-16 Falcon and the Tornado, it is really a cool add-on.
This is a picture from FS9 i am flying AerialFoundry F-18 and the F-16 is AI plane that escorts the tanker.

Does the tanker show in all the ""Carrier Practice" sessions?  I went to the practice mission and saw no option to tanker.

Never mind I found it and it's pretty cool.  Would be great to be able to see a fuel line and trying to catch it with your  probe.  Thanks.

I found the tanker by taking off in the "Carrier Practice" Mission.  Takeoff from the Carrier and climb on the carrier heading to 17,000' and you will notice a Boeing 737 flying in a holding pattern.  The 737 was flying at about 250 kts.

I tried to refuel by placeing myself just below and behind the tanker and watched my fuel gauges and nothing happened.  And yes the boom was extended.  I tried and varying distances from the tanker.  Has anyone else had any luck with getting refueled?  How long does it take to refuel?

worked for me after holding behind engine 2 for about 1.3 seconds.

How do you extend the probe?

I spent quite a while finding out what the parameters are for getting the fuel to flow from this tanker. What I discovered is:
The tanker is flying at 260kts.
If you tuck in close behind either of the wings, anywhere between the engine and about half way along the wing, she will refuel you.
You need to be in pretty close...close enough that you'd plough into the tail assembly of the tanker if you veered towards it.
I personally found the 2D cockpit view to be the easiest one to use for getting a good display of your speed and being able to line up the velocity vector on the HUD with the wing of the tanker.
She'll refuel at a reasonable rate, about 10% of your fuel capacity in 3 or 4 seconds.
You DON'T need to have the refuelling probe extended. But it looks cool, so flip the switch and just imagine there's a nice fat hose there for you to stick it in!!

how many other cool discoveries are there like this for people to find?
