Shore Based FLOLS
« on: July 01, 2010, 10:25:05 pm »

This may be of interest; I have found this site in the Sim OutHouse FSX scenery add on section:

Choctaw NOLF - KNFJ

http://www.sim-outhouse.com/sohforums/local_links.php?catid=1&linkid=83

NOLF = Naval Out Lying Field (it is near Pensacola).  It is a single runway airfield on which is mounted a Fresnel lens landing light system mounted on a trailer.  There is no ILS so you have to fly VFR.  I have started to try it out in a Cessna and you need eyes like a hawk on finals to be able to use it.

I strongly recommend you read the Choctaw Read Me before starting.

One word of warning:  If you are using Win 7 scenery installation is NOT easy.  I suggest you look at Mutley's Hangar, topic

http://forum.mutleyshangar.com/viewtopic.php?f=54&t=4548

This refers to an marvellous Australian web site which is a tutorial on adding FSX scenery in Win 7.

Installing FSX Scenery using Win 7
http://aussiex.org/forum/index.php?showtopic=4426

I have used it and it worked perfectly first time (which, for me is unusual).  The only addition I would make to this helpful tutorial is that you

1.  Unzip the required files into a folder on the desktop.
2.  Follow the tutorial but after step 3 you copy and paste the required folder from your desktop folder into the Select Scenery Directory / Addon Scenery window
3.  Follow step 4.

Happy Landings all eagle eyed pilots!

Have found that the datum lights seem to disappear or fade on finals at Choctaw, even though I think I'm on glidepath. Datums are visible further out though. Anyone see the datum lights all the way to touchdown? Meatball is visible at all glideslope angles throughout. Do I need to do something extra to 'highlight' the datum lights?

Tregarth, thanks for the headsup & info on all the pitfalls of installation etc.

You also have to d/l flols_trailer_scenery_v1.zip, Extarct Effects folder from this zip to your FSX Effects and datum lights will appear.

fsxnp, OK thanks - I don't have "flols_trailer_scenery_v1.zip" installed - I'll check that out.
___________

Thanks - now I can see the datums all the way to touchdown - good stuff.   ::)

 Dear FSXNP,

Thank you for this info, I thought the loss of the lights was my flying.  I appreciate your guidance.  For those who can't find the file, try FlightSim.com

Cheers.

Dear Serge,

I spoke too soon.  I have found the file and unzipped it.  But it contains a number of files, can you please look at Trailer Lights and tell me which ones go where?

Whilst trying to install the Choctaw scenery I did something wrong and now have the following message on FSX start up (Scenery Error).  I don't know how to remove it and I don't want to make a bad situation worse.

Clive,
just copy your unzipped Effects folder into main FSX folder, that's it.
As for Choctaw... did you try to open Scenery Library and to remove this strange entry from the list? When adding the scenery you have obvoiusly mistyped its name or something like that and now FSX can't find this weird scenery. Remove it and try again as per instructions. Hope this will help you

Dear Serge,

I copied the effects folder as you said and it works perfectly, the lights function right down to touch down thank you.  How did you know about the "flols_trailer_scenery_v1.zip" file?

On FSX start up, I now have a message "Invalid remote scenery path in Scenery Area.115" but I can't find Area 115.  I have searched my hard drive using Explorer but can't find it.  Do you have any idea where I can find it, please?

Thank you for your help,

Clive

Clive,
Area.115 is Reno scenery. Open Scenery Library, find Reno entry, open it and make sure its path points to C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Microsoft Flight Simulator X\Scenery\Cities\Reno (or something like that)
