Has anyone ever figured a way to contact an airport from a greater distance than what is provided by FSX? You know, like with radio communication. ???

Heavy traffic,bad weather,intrernal emergency,lost. Thats four need more?

In all those situations, I would want to contact the closest tower I could find, not one out of range.

That's no reason to contact a different tower.  Heavy traffic is a real life condition and you're flight plan and fuel reserve should plan appropriately.

No, unfortunately diverts are not supported by default ATC

As stated by others, you should contact nearest tower of an appropriate sized airport, not out of range.  Of course, again diverst are not supported by default ATC.

That's just poor airmanship and should never happen.  I do believe you can requires flight following from MSFS ATC, but if you're lost in the first place I'm not sure the extra info will help you.
