An updated Blue Angels "Fat Albert" C130
« on: December 13, 2008, 01:38:02 pm »
There is a project that I've been working on, in collaboration with "Intrepid" from our board here, to update an old freeware C130 model, originally for FS2004, but we've given it a complete overhaul and added several new special effects and current liveries for FSX.

We hoped that some of you VA Blue Angels groups might find some use for this.

Some of the things we've done are:
- two brand new liveries - Blue Angels 2008 and UK Royal Air Force
- I've included my layered PSP paintkits if any budding artists out there want to do more liveries
- new texture Environment Map to eliminate the horrible "rotating" reflections common on FS2004 ports
- a new, more realistic, 2d panel with several enhancements
- new JATO rocket effects, with sound
- new Engine startup smoke
- new in-flight Engine Smoke
- new flares effect, courtesy of Intrepid, with the characteristic "angel" smoke appearance. Might look quite spectacular at VA airshows
- a new widescreen version of the 2d panel for Matrox TripleHead2Go owners, again courtesy of Intrepid.

The package can be freely downloaded from voodoo.wikispaces.com

Here are some example images of the new liveries and effects. Hope some of you Blue Angels fans (or anyone really) enjoy this revamp.

Happy flying!

It looks good.

My JATO is not four specific effects, but a different kind.  It looks like you used some copyrighted files from the CS-C130?  Not good.

Nope, Raz, no commercial files used. It's all freeware or my own, or Intrepid's. Which bits did you think were from the CS-130?

The JATO and the smoke from the engines.

That's purely coincidental, Raz. The JATO effect is one I created myself completely from scratch. The flares are also from scratch by Intrepid and myself. The smoke is derived from a mixture of MS stock smoke and some other freeware packages out there that use smoke but it is not from any commercial packages.

However...there is one oversight on my part, because I didn't check that I have the right to distribute the model along with these new effects. I apologise for not thinking about that because I will have to go and separate out the new effects and post them on their own with rewritten documentation, and probably just put a link to the original aircraft for people to download separately from the source site.

I couldn't find the Controls folder for FSX in the AppData and didn't find the Standard.xml file you were talking about.

In Windows XP, the standard.xml file is in the following folder. (Make sure you have hidden folders visible.)

C:\Documents and Settings\your user\Application Data\Microsoft\FSX\Controls\

(The path is slightly different in Windows 7 but I don't know what it is.)

Hope this helps.

On ANY OS that runs Windows, you can do this-

1. Start
2. Run
3. %appdata%\Microsoft\fsx\Controls

Thanks, Raz. I couldn't for the life of me remember that variable.
