Aircraft Pulled into Gate?

I have noticed that, especially with big planes in crowded or tight parking areas, a tug will often meet the plane out on a taxiway and hook up to the plane with its engines off and pull it into the gate. I feel like this is just the opposite of a pushback procedure, so is there any way this could be made an option, at least at some gates in a few airports?
