mfsan:
during free flight is there a way to fly and land on an aircraft carrier, or can it only be done during mission play?

abc:
Yes it is possible  :)  (It took me quite some time to figure this one out)
This is just an example. AFAIK there are even more carriers at different locations available.
1. Place your aircraft at KNGU (Norfolk NAS)
2. This is ESSENTIAL.  Time & Season: (any season) Friday, suggest latest at 1500 Local time because the carrier is still static.
This means you can watch your catshots and traps via the replay function...
3. The carrier leaves at 1535. So after this time you can do circuits on the moving carrier...
4. Traffic setting:  ships & ferries at least 50%.

Where does she go once she leaves port, and does she ever come back?

The carrier leave about 1430 and turns south to about pilot ridge aprt 03nc and turns around to head back to norfolk.  It arrives back in port at about 1000am or so.  The trip south follows the coast about 10-20 miles offshore.  There are other carriers.  Go to San Diego, think it is north island NAS.  The carrier leaves there and goes to San Francisco.  It arrives there at about 2200 hrs.  There is also one in honolulu.  Haven't figured out when and where it goes.  It is possible to land on them in free flight.
